Certified translations for companies and individuals
Diction offers certified translations for both companies and individuals. Certified document translation may be necessary when translating, for example, powers of attorney, contracts, marriage certificates, diplomas or other documents that need to be used for official purposes.
What is a certified document translator?
A certified translator is someone who has obtained certification to undertake translations of documents that have legal validity. Certified translators are public officials who enjoy rights and bear responsibilities accordingly. Nowadays, a certified document translation is carried out by a certified document translator who translates the document into or from Icelandic and delivers the document with a stamp and signature.
We only work with translators who translate into their native language. Our translators are also specialized in various fields and use that knowledge to translate documents of different types. In addition, the translation is always proofread by another specialist with the same expertise. This ensures that the translation is accurate and a precise translation of the original text.
Notarization and Apostille
In most cases, a certified translation is sufficient confirmation of the legitimacy of the translation. However, the recipient of the document may require further confirmation or certification:
- If the recipient of the document requires the translation to be notarized (notarius publicus) by a county sheriff, the person requesting the confirmation must present identification and sign the document, or acknowledge their signature in the presence of the county sheriff's representative. Notarization is equivalent to the certification of two people about the act or fact it covers.
- In some cases, a certified translation requires confirmation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or so-called Apostille stamping. However, this only applies to documents that have been stamped by the Icelandic authorities and have been notarized (notarius publicus) by the county sheriff. We recommend that you ask the recipient exactly what requirements are placed on the translation.
